Merry Christmas!

Recently someone said that he was going on a cruise to Antarctica this December and asked for advice on what photographic gear he should take. Among other things he asked about equipment for photographs in the dark of night. I looked in my files for something to show that near the Antarctic Circle in December (the longest days of the year) darkness is not an issue.

This was taken on Christmas Day in 2003 between 10 and 11 in the evening. Our ship was moored in Paradise Bay and the passengers had gone out on a Zodiac cruise. Shortly before this was taken, a whale swam under our Zodiac about ten feet below the surface.
